The Department of Art offered its first classes on the same day that the University of West Florida opened its doors, September 25, 1967. Dr. John Carey, Chair of the Art Department, recruited faculty from best art programs across the country. Classes included only juniors, seniors, and graduate students until the Fall of 1983, when the University first admitted its freshmen.
Today, the Department of Art is housed in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts (Building 82), along with the Departments of Music and Theatre. John Markowitz currently serves as the Program Director, which is administratively part of the School of Fine, Performing & Communication Arts. The Department of Art is but one of 20 programs and/or departments within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
